Friday, March 15, 2019I remember the first time I met Jeffrey Yard. It was 1960 and my family had just moved next door to the Yards. Jeffrey and I were both 5 years old. He was all sunshine, freckles and beautiful blue eyes topped off with a crew cut. I spent pretty much everyday of my life with Jeffrey thereafter. We walked to school together, sat in the same classroom with the same teacher, same kids for grades 1 through 5. Day in and day out, Jeffrey was smiling, happy and kind to everyone. Boy, girls, all the kids loved Jeffrey. His mischievious streak got him in trouble a lot, but that was what made him so much fun. When we got to the 6th grade, Mr. Yard was transferred to Philadelphia. My family sobbed in the Yard's driveway as Jeffrey, his sister Bonnie and brother Mike loaded in the car with their parents and left our neighborhood forever. That was a sad day. The last time I saw Jeffrey was about 20 years ago. My husband and I were living in Hilton Head and I saw an obituary for Delmar Yard in the local paper. I went to the memorial service and, on what was another sad day, had a wonderful reunion with Jeffrey and Bonnie. We talked for hours and I was delighted to hear all the details of Jeffrey's most excellent life, family and career. Jeffrey the man had the same sunny soul as Jeffrey the little boy. Today is saddest of all my Jeffrey Yard days. I logged onto Facebook last night for the first time in months and the first person's page I looked for was Jeffrey's. I am heartbroken to find that Jeffrey suddenly left us all just a few days ago. I always thought that someday, I'd see him again. My deepest condolences to Jeffrey's family and dear mother and to his legion of friends who loved him like I did and will miss him always. Godspeed Jeffrey.
