Obituary of Carmela Parto (Dota-Baccari)

Parto (Dota-Baccari), Carmela Mary, 87 years and 9 months young; of Margate City, NJ; passed away cradled into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by her family and special friend, Ms. Carmela Guzman, at Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point NJ, under Holy Redeemer Hospice Care on Friday, January 4th 2019.

Carmela was born in Philadelphia on Saturday, April 4th 1931 to the late Antonio F. and Carmella (Russo) Dota. Predeceased in death by her loving husband, Charles Parto and her former husband Anthony M. (Carmella) Baccari of Clementon, NJ.  Loving sister of Anthony (late Carol) Dota of Huntingdon Valley, PA.  Predeceased by her loving brothers Pasquale (late Ann) Dota; Joseph, Louis (late Irene) Dota; Albert (late Rita) Dota; her elder sister and guardian angel Rita (late Joseph) DeNota, also of Margate.  Adoring aunt to her special niece the late RoseAnne DeNota.  Also predeceased by her long time faithful friend Ann Donovan, of Philadelphia.

Loving mother of Jodyann (Tony) Ilisco, of Woodbury Heights, NJ; Anthony M. (Denise) Baccari, Jr. of Doylestown, PA; Joseph R. Baccari of Ventnor, NJ; and C. Christopher (Portia) Parto, also of Margate.  Doting Me-Me to Ashley Brooke Ilisco, Anthony Ilisco, Victor (Jill) Ilisco, Kristin Tinari, Danielle (Joseph) Tinari-Pilarski, Brent D. Tinari and his fiance Shaylyn Lynch, Devon Parto, Gavin Parto, and Dylan Parto. Great Grandmother to Johnny, Evangelina, Catalina, Joseph “JJ” Pilarski Jr, and Baby Pilarski.  Fondly remembered by her loving niece and Goddaughter Barbara (William) Dota Rice as well as her loving nephew and Godson Joseph (Trish) DeNota; affectionately known as “Aunt Millie” to many, many nieces and nephews.

Carmela’s relentless faith and trust in Jesus (her “Rock”) took Carmela to amazing heights during her life.  She especially took refuge in the Lord during her down periods and never failed to give Him praise, regardless of her circumstance. In learning of Carmela’s passing, Father Joe Wallace remembered Carmela lovingly as a “Spiritual Powerhouse”. Carmela was a long time member of Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church in Margate, leading many prayer groups in her home. She was a member of the church choir for many years and was famous for providing a punch bowl of “secret” homemade eggnog to enjoy in fellowship with the choir and her special friends Lenny McFillin and Jim Keyser, after Christmas Eve Mass every year.  (Her secret which she never kept secret: The egg nog was spiked with a half a gallon of Breyer’s Ice Cream). Carmela was an advocate for the downtrodden as a longtime volunteer at Our Lady’s Residence in Pleasantville tending to the elderly, as well as Holy Spirit Parish in Atlantic City, fearlessly walking through inner city neighborhoods (against the advice of family) to help those in need.

Carmela was known to be an excellent cook and baker, who could master any recipe that was handed to her. She was also known for her legendary Sunday afternoon dinners where dozens of family and friends would just “drop by” knowing that she had the “pot on” and were always welcome.

One of Carmela’s favorite Bible verses is Micah 6:8 where the scripture states simply what the Lord requires of us as brothers and sisters:   “This is to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God” Carmela certainly lived her life in this manner and remains a shining light to all of those who crossed paths with her.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Hospitaller Sisters of Mercy, 917 South Main Street, Pleasantville, NJ 08232.

A visitation will be held from 10-11am, followed by a Mass at 11am, on Thursday, January 10th, 2019, at Blessed Sacrament Churc, 11 N. Kenyon Avenue, Margate City, NJ.
