Obituary of Joseph League

League, Joseph – 89, of Egg Harbor Township, NJ passed away peacefully at home on May 8, 2018 after several months of care by his family, care-giver, Kate and Samaritan Hospice (“The Debbies” and Vivian). Joe was born in Atlantic City, NJ “up the inlet” on January 30, 1929, the son of Edgar and Rose (Mellen) League. Joe attended Holy Spirit Grammar and High School before entering the seminary of St. Charles in Baltimore, MD. He graduated St. Mary’s Seminary, May, 1951 and that summer, Joe met the love of his life, Florence (Woods) League while working at Fralinger’s Salt Water Taffy on the boardwalk. Soon after, he enlisted in the United States Navy completing “corps school” and Officer Candidate School where he was commissioned as Ensign, serving on active duty for seven years.  Joe was extremely proud to serve onboard the USS Prevail and USS Diamondhead and retired from the Naval Reserve as Captain in 1978. Joe had a long and happy career with RCA, working in Corporate Staff and Executive Training in Cherry Hill, NJ, “30 Rock,” and Moorestown, NJ.  Joe was a devoted husband and father. Upon retirement Joe spent many happy times traveling back and forth to Vienna, VA to visit his grandchildren, enjoying predawn bike rides on the boardwalk with his wife and long-time buddy Al and listening to the Yankees. Joe often expressed his gratitude for the beauty of the beach while sitting in his chair on 18th Avenue in Longport or in Palm Beach Shores, looking out over the ocean and remaking, “It just doesn’t get any better than this.”

Joe is survived by his wife of 64 years, Florence (Woods) League; children: Joseph, Jr. (Kieu) of La Jolla, CA; Mary Christina Desmarais (Carl) of Vienna, VA;  John of Arlington, VA; Bernadette Lambert (John) of Washington Township, NJ; his brothers Mick (Sis) and Pete (Lynn); two favorite granddaughters, Mary and Annie and 52 nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, May 11th from 12:30 – 1:30 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church 724 Maple Ave, Linwood, NJ 08221 followed by Funeral Mass at 1:30.
