Obituary of John Murphy

MURPHY, Captain John Francis "Jack" USNR (Ret.) of Longport formerly of Philadelphia (born on a two-streeter), passed away on May 27, 2014.

A product of the Philadelphia Public School System, he graduated from Frankford High School in 1939. He earned a B.S. degree in secondary education in 1943 from the then West Chester State Teacher's College. After WWII, he was awarded an Ed.M in secondary education and American history at Temple University, where later he received a K-12 principal certificate. He is Director Emeritus of the Westchester University Association where he served at President 1989-1990. A member of the American Legion he was also a trustee of the Longport Historical Society.

John had two concurrent careers: a teacher/vice principal and principal in the Philadelphia Public School System and as a member of the United States Naval Reserve for 34 years. He served aboard a destroyer escort in the Pacific Ocean during World War II and he was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and served in the Fourth Naval District Intelligence Office at the Philadelphia Naval Base. Later, he became Commanding Officer of the Fourth Naval District Reserve Intelligence Division.

Loving father of John F. Murphy, Jr., he is survived by cousin Elaine Stone Harman and sisters and brothers-in-law Helen & Charles McCaffrey and Constance & Patrick Drumm, Constance & George Smith and Edward Smith; and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by wives Margaret Mary (nee Nolan) and Norene "Renee" (nee Smith); brothers Bill and Walther and parents Pete and Maggie.

A viewing will be held at on Friday, May 30th from 9:00AM to 11:00AM followed by Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Trinity Parish: Epiphany Church, 2803 Ventnor Ave., Longport, NJ at 11:00AM where he was a lector and altar server for many years. Interment at Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery, Estell Manor, NJ.
