Obituary of Eugene Wilson
Wilson, Eugene “Gene” S., 85, of Mays Landing, passed away at home surrounded by family on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, after a long illness. Gene was born in Red Bank, NJ to Elwood and Elsie Wilson on September 13, 1932. He graduated from Keyport High School in 1951 and shortly after enlisted in the U.S Air Force where he completed his training in Air Traffic Control.
Gene was discharged from the Air Force in 1954 and was employed as a part-time control tower operator at West Trenton International Airport. He was hired by the FAA in 1961 and continued with various jobs at West Trenton Airport, including Acting Facility Chief. In 1972 he was selected for a position at NAFEC (FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center) where he performed a variety of jobs to ensure the best possible order for the Air Traffic System. In 1984 he was selected for a position at FAA Headquarters in Washington, DC until his retirement in 1986. After retirement he worked for several private aviation companies until September 11, 2001.
When Gene married his beloved wife, Donna, he became a husband, father, and grandfather! He loved nothing more than spending time with family and his life-long friends. Gene had many interests, but anyone who knew him was aware of his love of aviation, especially the Reno Air Races, which he attended for over 40 years. He was quiet and introspective but had a very dry sense of humor and was always up for a party. He and Donna enjoyed traveling around the country and spending time at their home in the Poconos. Gene would not want anyone to be sad of his passing, but to remember him by watching a beautiful sunset while having the perfect Moscow Mule.
Gene is survived by his wife, Donna F. Wilson; children, Roberta Waters-Hall, Jeffery (Tracy) Waters, Kingdon (Susan) Waters, and Donna Marie Waters; grandchildren, John (Luisa) Berggren, Michael Waters, Christopher (Simin) Waters, Christina Waters, Kevin Waters, Nicholas Waters, and Stephen Waters; great-grandchildren, Kylie and Gabriella Berggren and Jonathan Waters.
Gene is also survived by his sister, Barbara (Don) Thomas of Ocala, FL; cousin, Robert Porter of Forked River, NJ; nephew, Howard Thomas of Crestline, OH; niece, Pam (Duane) Zwick of Ocala, FL; and great-niece, Jessica (Tim) Theodorou of Newark, OH.
The family would like to invite everyone for a celebration of Gene’s life from 6-8pm on Sunday, January 28th at the George H. Wimberg Funeral Home, 1707 New Road, Linwood.
