Obituary of Lee Shumsky
Shumsky, Lee, I died after a long and very courageous battle with cancer and Hepatitis C on Sunday, October 1, 2017, with my best friend, caregiver, and my beautiful wife, Maria, by my side.
I decided to write my own obituary before I passed away.
I was born in Atlantic City, N.J., to John and Doris (Caplan) Shumsky, who were loving, great parents on April 6, 1952. And to wonderful grandparents Pop Pop and Mum Mum Caplan who helped raise me. I had a great childhood or should I say how lucky I was to have my childhood.
I played all the sports during grammar school. My dear friend, Mario DeLuca and I won most valuable players in football; which I was so proud of.
I graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1970. And I belonged to the Playboy’s Fraternity during that time.
I went on to attend two years of college at Atlantic Community College. Then went on to attend two years at Stockton State College where I graduated with a degree in Business Management. I also was able to take some courses towards my Masters.
Then I was blessed by my Mum Mum who lent my brother, Jerry Shumsky and I money to open a better men’s clothing store, located at the corner of Arkansas and Atlantic Avenue in Atlantic City in 1976; just as gambling came to town. The store was named “Cappys” after my wonderful Mother; whose nickname was Cappy.
Then in 1986, I opened Shumsky’s Famous Bakery at 4008 Ventnor Avenue, Atlantic City. I was so proud since I did not know how to bake a cupcake. At one point I was servicing the QE2 cruise line. I never knew how blessed I was to be so fortunate and successful in my two careers.
I loved by life and my music and I wanted to thank some of those that made my life so rewarding. Topping the list and most important is my wife, Maria, she was always the one who carried me when I could not carry myself. She was my rock. She was my conscience. She will live with me forever.
Surviving is my son, Joseph N. Shumsky. He is warm, happy now, and a survivor. Don’t look back Joey, always look ahead. And my daughter, Elyse Alcorn, Also surviving is my brother, Jerry Shumsky.
To my very special, oldest and dearest friends; Mario DeLuca, Pat Evans, Ronnie McCarthy, Pete Calabrese, Alex Linsk and Richie Siracusa. Remember me with smiles and laughter in your heart, and music in your soul. Because that is how I remember all of you.
To those friends I came to know later (I shall mention a few). To Ed and Bridget Rafter, you both have big hearts and a love of God. You both were always there for me and Maria. And to Frank DiEgidio my friend. I will be at your wedding to Julie; just not in person. Joe Sawyer and Scott Becker thank you for everything. You never say no. Mike Marino, my friend, thank you for everything. And to my first very special girlfriend, Donna Frio, it was my pleasure to call you my friend for all these years. Those were such great years.
The joy over the years have been our “Girls” Cappy and Savannah, our friendly, huggable-kissy Maine Coons.
Because our pets give us such unconditional love and enrich our lives, I would be honored to have donations made to the Humane Society of Atlantic County, 1401 Absecon Blvd., Atlantic City, NJ 08401 or to the charity of your choice.
I’ve had a wonderful life and thank you to all who made it so. This is not the end. We shall all meet up again one day just not on this Earth.
Love, Lee Shumsky
