Obituary of Richard Votta

Richard J. Votta,  age 89 of Margate, passed away at home on Wednesday, May 24, 2017.


Richard was born Jan. 5, 1928 in South Philadelphia, Pa. to F. Richard and Mary Votta. He lived in South Philadelphia until the age of 12 when he moved to Yeadon, Pa. He attended West Catholic High School class of 1946. Upon graduating from school, he enlisted in the Army and served his country for two years before being Honorably Discharged in March 1948 with the rank of Sergeant. He met the love of his life, Maryann, on June 4, 1950 and formed an everlasting bond. They married on Sept. 20, 1952 and lived in Yeadon, Pa.

He worked in several shoe businesses in the Philadelphia area and fell in love with the industry. Richard and his father bought and operated Katzinger’s Shoes in Atlantic City in 1958 and commuted every day from Yeadon to Atlantic City.  In 1960 Maryann and Richard relocated to Margate City where they raised their 5 children. Richard retired in 1989 after 31 years of owning Katzinger’s Shoes.


He was a current member and past President of the Ventnor/Margate Lions and a member of the Veteran’s Association. He was a former member of the Holy Spirit High School fathers club, usher at Blessed Sacrament, drove the Margate Senior Bus, sons of Italy, republican club to name a few. He was always volunteering his time for various organizations and never hesitated to offer help. He loved to travel with Maryann and went on over 30 different cruises. He was a well-liked and respected member of the Margate Community and was loved by all. He will be dearly missed by many family and friends and will never be forgotten.

He is survived by his five children: Richard (Debbie) of Brigantine, Joseph (Ellen) of Galloway, Maryann of Sicklerville, John (Patricia) of EHT and Joanne (Mark) of SomersPoint. He also leaves behind his ten grandchildren who adored him: Jacquelyn, Joseph, Timothy, Kevin, Caitlin, Brittany, Karly, Emily, Matthew and Calli; and his two sisters Betty Dyer and Maryann Whisman along with many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Maryann and his parents F. Richard and Mary Votta.

 Viewings will be held Tuesday, May 30 rom 6-8 pm at the George H. Wimberg Funeral Home, 1707 New Rd., Linwood, and again on Wednesday May 31 from 9-11am at  the Holy Trinity Parish/Blessed Sacrament Church Ventnor Aves., Margate. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am, with Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing.
