Obituary of John McLaughlin

McLaughlin, John James (Jay), 81, of Linwood, NJ, surrounded by his loving family, passed away on Friday, August 20, 2021, not before getting in a final round of golf on his birthday, August 9. He has now dropped into the Eternal Wave and will ride it to the 19th hole awaiting him on the sunny beach in the sky. Born in Darby, PA and growing up in Lansdowne, PA he graduated from Monsignor Bonner High School and St Joseph’s University (varsity crew) before becoming a full-time South Jersey resident. In his younger years he was a proud Margate Lifeguard and developed a life-long love of water sports – surfing, Hobie sailing, rowing, fishing, and kayaking. On land, he was an avid skier, tennis player, and golfer.  He loved attending sporting events of his children and grandchildren.   His business years (McLaughlin Realty) were focused on commercial property transactions in Atlantic City where he enjoyed the pace of activity during the early days of the City’s Re-Birth. His humor was PUN-ishing and his love of (and complaining about) the Phillies and Eagles was legendary – at least he left us believing the Phils were in first.  He is survived by his wife of 58 years Mary Lou (nee Munyan, “Hon”, short for Honey), four children: Judd (Kim), Laurie (Mike), Mandy (Pippa), and Jenna (Rocky), along with 10 grandchildren: Grace, Abigail, and John McLaughlin; Melanie, Devin, and Liam Plante, Michael and Aedyn Crane; Anthony and Elise Tedeschi; sisters and brothers: Mimi Martin, Frank McLaughlin, Jim McLaughlin (Susan), and Chrissy Wendt (Jay); sister-in-law Jill Murphy. He was predeceased by his parents, John McLaughlin (MD) and Frances (nee Higgins); in-laws Thomas and Virginia (nee Bill) Munyan. A visitation will be held on Friday, August 27, 2021 from 3pm – 4:30pm, followed by a service at the George H. Wimberg Funeral Home, 1707 New Road (Route 9), Linwood, NJ 08221 – golf/Hawaiian shirts and flip-flops preferred. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a gift to the charity of your choice. He had a lot of fun in this life, which he will miss - almost as much as we will miss him – We Love You Hon/Dad/Jaysie!!!
