Thomas J. Starkey

Starkey, Thomas J., 78, of Brigantine, NJ and formerly of Stamford, CT passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, November 21, 2017.  Thomas was born in Atlantic City, NJ on December 11, 1938 to the late Roland and Eleanor (Zimmer) Starkey.

Thomas graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1956 and the University of Miami in 1961, where he was the advertising manager of Tempo Magazine, which was awarded the best College Publication in the US at that time.  In 1961, he began his career in NYC buying and selling animal and marine products on a global basis.  He later took a position with HJ Baker until his retirement in 2002 as the Vice President of International Trade.

Thomas loved the Lord Jesus Christ and served him faithfully at the Stamford Baptist Church for over 40 years.  One of his fondest memories was his mission work in Haiti, helping to build a library/community center.

Thomas had a quirky sense of humor that was legendary.  Whether you were 1 or 100, he had the gift of filling a room with laughter.  He was selfless, humble and regularly made sacrifices for others.  It didn’t matter if you were family, friend or a stranger, he was there for you.

He was an avid fan of the Post Puzzle Page and a competitive scrabble player.  He enjoyed a game of golf with friends and extensively traveled with his wife and family.

He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-three years, Judith Poli Starkey; his son Thomas (Sharon); daughter Donna (Brian) Gerard; his grandchildren Jordan and Jack Starkey, Brian Jr, James and Grace Gerard and Samantha (Yari) Gerard Usherov. Also surviving is his sister Linda Starkey and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend a special gratitude to all the doctors, nurses and Palliative Care at the AtlanticCare Mainland Hospital for providing comfort and care to Thomas in his last days.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at The Stamford Baptist Church, 602 High Ridge Road, Stamford, CT at 10:30am.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mainland Baptist Church, 512 Pitney Road, Galloway, NJ or Hope Haitian Mission, c/o Stamford Baptist Church, 602 High Ridge Rd, Stamford, CT.
