It is with great sadness that the family of Edward Charles Purinton announces his death on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at the age of 70 years. He died peacefully at his home in Egg Harbor Township, with his wife, son and daughter at his bedside. Ed waged a creative, brave battle for 2 years and 7 1/2 months with Glioblastoma Multiforme IV brain cancer.
He was born in Detroit, Michigan, lived in Dearborn, Michigan and moved to Garden City, Long Island, NY when he was in 8th grade. He graduated from Garden City High School and went on to Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia. There he met his future wife, Sandra Pitman Purinton. He then earned a master’s degree in Fine Arts at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. Ed and Sandy married in 1972 and he worked designing bottles and labels at Wheaton Plastics. His teaching career then started at the former Atlantic County Vocational Technical School where he taught graphic design. He also taught art part time at Atlantic County Community College and at Stockton College. Ed took an early retirement and his favorite retirement job was as a courier for CASA Payroll. He rode with and delivered to people he really liked! Ed was a longstanding member of the Ocean Heights Presbyterian Church whose members were tremendously supportive during his long illness and during the time when he and his wife were raising their two children. Ed loved to do projects around the house. His grandchildren knew their PaPa would glue or fix their toys. He always had our backs. If you asked Ed to do something and he could, he would say, “I’d be glad to do it.” Ed’s two favorite hobbies were Northwest Coast Indian masks and items and restoring, showing, and talking about classic cars. Ed is survived by his wife, Sandy; son, Matthew; daughter, Renae; and two grandchildren, Kaliah and Zach. He is also survived by his sisters, Kathi Ramos (Charles) of NYC, Laurel Rand (Richard) of Seattle; brother in law, Tom Pitman (Judy) of Maryland; uncle, William Bausman (Joanne) of Delaware; five nieces and one nephew; four special cousins and many supportive neighbors and friends.
A visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00am, followed by an 11:00am service on Saturday, November 18th at Ocean Heights Presbyterian Church, 2116 Ocean Heights Ave, Egg Harbor Township, NJ. Burial will be private at a later date. Ed asked that after his memorial service we have subs and cookies at the back of the church. In lieu of flowers, Ed asked for donations for the education of his grandchildren, Kaliah and Zachariah. Checks can be made payable to Sandra Purinton, Purinton Grandchildren Fund, c/o TD Bank, 399 New Rd., Somers Point, NJ 08244. Arrangements by the George H. Wimberg Funeral Home, Linwood – Ventnor.
